Decatur, Georgia- Walmart received major backlash this week after choosing to exclude and lock away African American hair care products from their hair care section of the store.
Local shoppers are disappointed in Walmart’s actions and have complained that locking, urban hair care products are unfair and unjust.
Chapati Jenkins, 27 said she can't believe that Walmart would even consider this stereotypical action. "Not every African American person is going to steal products." Chakita explained. “There is no reason why our hair care products should be locked away as opposed to others."
According to other news sources, Georgia is not the only state that is receiving backlash. There have been reports of multiple Walmart's in the California area receiving lawsuits for these very same actions.
Many took to social media to vent about their frustrations with Walmart and their discriminating behavior. Many post videos and pictures via Twitter showing the products locked behind glass cases.
After many complaints and bad press in the past couple days, Walmart has finally removed the urban hair care products from behind the glass case. Nonetheless, the issue remains that people were offended and disappointed by Walmart's actions.
Charles Clawson, (Walmart's spokesperson) issued a statement explaining that Walmart does not discriminate. However, certain products are locked away for loss prevention. Every now and then they're certain products that are targeted by shoplifters and need to be locked away for prevention of being stolen.
"I feel as if everything was a big misunderstanding." Nina McTaw explained. “I frequently shop here at Walmart for urban hair care products, but I noticed that they are becoming more popular and have a high risk of being stolen." Mrs. McTaw explained.
As far as Walmart is concerned, they have released a statement stating, "We are sensitive to this issue." and are doing their best to find the best solution to this problem moving forward.
